Steamboat night at XFY Steamboat (肥羊火锅城)

Steamboat is one of Malaysian’s favorite dish. Ingredients are cooked in a simmering pot of broth, with ingredients being cooked at the table.

 I met up with my ex-teammates on Friday night, and the group agreed on a steamboat dinner at Xiao Fei Yang Restaurant (小肥羊火锅城) at Damansara Uptown. Meh-eh-eh. Little Fat Sheep, that’s the word-for-word translation of Xiao Fei Yang. 

 One of us was confused for a bit, as restaurant’s signboard shows XFY Steamboat (肥羊火锅城), instead of Xiao Fei Yang restaurant. In Chinese, they omit xiao (little) altogether; only Fei Yang (fat sheep). Where is the xiao (little) in the restaurant’s name? Is it the same restaurant?

 I assumed there was a name change, but menu still shows Xiao Fei Yang Restaurant. What a big identity confusion for customers. Little fat sheep is all grown up, perhaps.

This restaurant was recommended by my ex-colleague few years back. I have not visited it, in favoured of Bone & Pot (有骨气) just down the road from Xiao Fei Yang.

Bone & Pot used to be my default steamboat place, until my last disappointing visit. My cousin drove all the way from Bukit Jalil, to be treated with a dissapointing meal. Soup base is the utmost ingredient in a steamboat, and their Signature Pork Bone Broth is no longer to-die-for.

Xiao Fei Yang is famed for its Mongolian-style steamboat.  A perfect (spicy) meal for rainy season.

 They only have two types of soup base: Herbal Soup (RM 21) and Hot & Spicy Soup (aka Mah Lat) (麻辣) (RM 27) for the fearsomes grrrrr. We ordered the yin yang combination soup, costs RM 23. That’s the beauty of eating in a group, only costs RM 4 per pax. We didn’t order Extra Spicy, which will incur additional RM 4.

 Now, here comes the infamous RM1 disinfect tableware, mentioned in many blogs. Most restaurateurs would have hidden the cost. Should I admire them for their transparency? I assumed this is paid to Ken Zi Yuan for utensil cleasing and disinfection service. I wonder if any smart aleck has asked before, whether they are allowed to bring their utensils?

 It was a fairly good meal. Some of us found that the soup is salty.

 Dessert definitely was the highlight of our dinner. We ordered their signature mixed fried yam and sweet potato doused in hot maltose sugar (mak nga tong), which needs to be dipped into ice cold water provided. We had fun eating and ‘pulling’ the dessert apart.

Total damage: RM 213.40 for 6 pax / RM 35 per pax.
