A taste of Hong Kong at the Tasty Congee and Noodle Siam Paragon

How can we scratch the travel itch without travelling? Well … a visit to the Tasty Congee & Noodle Shop at Siam Paragon sort of does the trick – and it does brings us closer to Hong Kong with its Hong Kong-style wanton noodle and zhaliang (炸兩).

Opened since Dec 2020, it has been bustling with customers and I waited till the hype has died down. As our visit coincided with a public holiday, we arrived early with the intention of avoiding long queue. But yet at 11.30am, the spacious 2-storey restaurant has already reached its full capacity and we had to wait our turn. We were told that it’ll take 1/2 hour for a table and staff was pretty spot on. They called us in 1/2 hour time when our table was ready.

We only ordered 3 dishes, and it’s more than enough for 2 of us. Total damage: 929.83 baht

  • Shrimp dumpling noodle in soup (Small) – 190 baht++
  • Chu-hau beef brisket noodle – 300 baht++
  • Zhaliang – 180 baht++
  • Chinese tea x 2 – 120 baht++

Dish of the day for me was the shrimp dumpling noodle. Seeing the egg noodle on top of the wontons made me very happy as it brought me back to many wonderful food experiences in Hong Kong. I read before here that the reason for that it’s so that the noodles do not soak too much in the soup and for the wontons to remain warm. Bf prefers the Chu-hau beef brisket noodle – tender beef with some gravy for the noodle is his kind of thing. We thought the zhaliang was awesome – the sauce was served separately; we were able to control the degree of ‘saltinness’ in that sense.

We ain’t no food critic; unable to comment whether it’ tastes like the HK-version but definitely HK-style and as authentic as we can find here in Thailand. Recommended for that taste of Hong Kong albeit expensive – but again, where else can we find authentic HK-taste her in Bangkok? It’s worth the moolah for us ..

Not Your Typical Tourist

Travel opens up a whole new world, which is cliche but true. I am a strong advocate for independent and solo travel. I was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but now live in Bangkok, Thailand, resulted from a chance encounter in 2009 with my why-are-you-Thai bf. I am now split between two countries. One country for my bf, another for the family, for the occasional weekend together.
