A Coffee with a View: Navigating Etiquette at % Arabica Empire Tower

Stepping into % Arabica at Bangkok’s Empire Tower is a truly breathtaking experience. Located on the 55th floor, this cafe offers a stunning, panoramic view of the city skyline, with iconic landmarks like the Mahanakhon Tower and the winding Chao Phraya River visible from certain angle. It’s no wonder it has become a must-visit for locals and tourists alike.

With about 20 seats available, the space is intimate and designed to showcase the incredible scenery. While some seats offer a particularly coveted view of the Mahanakhon building, honestly, there isn’t a bad angle in the house. The view is spectacular no matter where you sit (or even stand).

My visits, typically in the early morning before the crowds arrive, are often a peaceful experience. Most patrons are considerate, enjoying their coffee or even working quietly on their laptops. However, the cafe’s popularity also comes with a challenge: navigating the modern etiquette of a public space.

On a few rare occasions, I’ve seen a handful of visitors whose quest for the perfect photo takes precedence over common courtesy. This can mean people standing directly behind seated guests to get their shot, or “posers” taking hundreds of photos from a single, high-traffic spot, creating a significant disturbance for others. If you don’t have the luxury of time to wait for a coveted spot, a little politeness goes a long way. Simply apologizing and asking permission to take a quick photograph can make all the difference, and you might find that seated patrons are happy to accommodate a quick shot if you are respectful.

While every paying customer has the right to use the space, a little self-awareness and consideration go a long way. This shared space is for everyone to enjoy—whether you’re there for a quiet moment, a quick coffee, or to capture a memory. Being mindful of those around you ensures that the stunning atmosphere remains a positive experience for all.

Plan Your Visit:

  • Location: Level 55, Empire Tower, 1 S Sathon Rd.
  • Nearest BTS: Chong Nongsi, Exit 5
  • Getting there: Take the dedicated lift from the basement area.
  • Operating Hours: Monday–Sunday, 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM.
  • Pro Tip: Arrive early in the morning to enjoy the view before the afternoon crowds gather.

Not Your Typical Tourist

Travel opens up a whole new world, which is cliche but true. I am a strong advocate for independent and solo travel. I was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but now live in Bangkok, Thailand, resulted from a chance encounter in 2009 with my why-are-you-Thai bf. I am now split between two countries. One country for my bf, another for the family, for the occasional weekend together.
