April’s Bakery: Conquering My Bias for HK-Inspired Thai Pastries (And Loving It!)

I’ll admit it: I used to be a bit of a snob when it came to Thai-international pastries. Having seen April’s Bakery tucked into shopping malls, their pale, unpretentious pies often caught my eye, but I never bothered to try them. While they aren’t the prettiest looking pastries, they have a comforting, homey feeling that seems to capture the heart of Thai people. Known for a sweet tooth, Thai desserts rarely appeal to me.
But then came the eleventh-hour desperation. The day before my long trip to Norway, I was searching for Chinese pastries to bring along for a taste of home. April’s Bakery popped up on a delivery app, and I took the leap, sending up a silent prayer that they would be good.
The Surprise Success Story
Oh boy, was I pleasantly surprised! The pastries made for excellent treats before the Western bakeries started dominating our menu during the trip. In fact, after returning to Thailand, I’ve since bought from April’s Bakery multiple times, exploring both their sweet and savory options.

While I slightly prefer their sweet selections, every filling has been a winner. We’ve tried Coconut, Custard, Thai Custard, Salted Egg and Winter Melon, Taro and Ginkgo, Durian, and Pineapple, while my husband has explored others, including the savory Tuna, and Chicken in XO sauce. Ironically, despite its success, we still haven’t tried April’s “hero” product: the Red Pork Pie that initially made the brand famous!
The Secret to Their Pastry
The real appeal lies in the unique construction:
- The Pastry: It’s incredibly soft and thin, offering a delicate taste and texture that contrasts traditional thick, buttery crusts. Crucially, the recipe is made without butter and milk, making it lighter and easier to enjoy.
- The Filling: The fillings are genuinely not too sweet, a refreshing departure from many local desserts, perfectly catering to a wider palate.
Priced predominantly in the very affordable 30 baht+ range, April’s Bakery is now firmly on my radar whenever I crave that perfect Chinese-style pastry.
An Inspiring Thai Brand & Where to Find Them
It’s wonderful to hear they are planning for global expansion (already presence in neighbouring countries) —I’m always proud when a Thai brand makes it big internationally! Watching Khun Nathanaporn Euawanthanakhun (Orn), the owner, discuss her journey and overcoming initial business setbacks is truly inspiring. This is one Thai dessert that successfully blends Hong Kong inspiration with wide appeal.
You can find April’s Bakery products at shopping malls, 7-Eleven, and their “April’s Bakery Flagship Store” in Cove Hill (Charoenkrung), or simply order through delivery apps.
