Finding that ‘perfect’ restaurant for celebrating family occasions has always been a challenge. How do you please everyone in the family … when one includes (heavy)-meat -eaters-but-25%-in-the-group-are-vegetarians. Then to top it all off, one-table-that-fits-all-16-of-us, if possible, thank you very much.
Restoran The Bird 鳥小食館, a place none of us have been before was put forward by moi as a suggestion. But, what’s life without a little risk? Boring, no? Choosing The Bird 鳥小食館 was one risk that paid off, for we had a memorable family dinner!
The restaurant is owned by Jimmy Liew 刘汉文, Desmond Liew 刘伟强 and James Leong. I read in one blog that they are cousins. We were honored meeting Jimmy and Desmond, and hearing them sing as well that night. Don’t play play, for both Jimmy and Desmond are local celebrities, and according to what was written here, Desmond Liew is one of the winners of Astro Veteran Talent Quest.
Eldest sis called ahead for reservation, and was told that their biggest table fits 12 pax. Since there are 16 of us, she booked 2 tables. Staff was kind enough to let us shift one of the tables, and place it side by side.
Desmond attended to us, and told us that the restaurant has been around for 11 years, serving many repeat customers. When we arrived around 7pm on a Sunday night, the restaurant was quite empty. But more customers trailed in later, and these seem to be the regulars mentioned by Desmond. Regulars are extremely important to a restaurant, and it makes or breaks a restaurant. And regulars equate to successful formula, and in this case, the food, the performance and the ambience work their magic.
The food ordering was done haphazardly by me and 2nd sis, as we are not used to ordering for big group. We were lucky that Desmond helped us and advised us to go with the set menu for a more affordable meal. He even threw in a plate of tofu dish for us free! He also advised us to go with one large + one regular set menu to feed our group, but we ordered the following:
1 Set Menu – Large size for 6-10 pax (RM 199)
We are to choose one dish from the list, and I have indicated the ala carte price below.
Fish: Butter King/Nyonya/Curry/White Tomyum. Mom chose nyonya style cooking style for our fish dish. (RM 73)
Chicken or Sotong: Serai/Basil Leaf/Kam Heong Harko. I chose sotong cooked with basil leaf. Sis commented that the basil leaf taste is prominent. (RM 28)
Chicken or Prawn: 3 Flavor. “Order the prawn,” my aunt said, for obvious reason … and I understand why *grin. I thought that the prawn is not fresh, fresh. (Prawn RM 46 / Chicken RM 28)
Vege: Yow Mak/Kai Lan/4 Heavenly King/Lettuce (RM 23)
Fu Yong Egg or Tofu (RM 23)
Desmond gave us one plate of choy po tofu (worth RM 23) free 🙂 My family like this dish, and wanted to order additional serving, but it was already sold out.
From ala carte menu, we ordered:
3 Flavor Chicken – RM 28, large … I do like this dish a lot.
Coffee Fried Chicken Wings (Set of 3) – RM 11.90 x 2 sets. This was added later on, and it was yummylicious. And I got to savor it, properly taste the chicken wings, sans the ‘overlapping’ taste
Yau Mak garlic – RM 23, large
Pucuk Paku belacan – RM 23, large
Not only that we were given a plate of tofu on the house, they even gave us free desserts.
In all honesty, I regretted ordering one set to be shared by two tables. As I was busy taking photos, dishes were piled high on my plate. Imagine 8-9 dishes on my plate at one time! Yukes. I am the type that do not like dishes to be mixed, and that usually happens when dishes are piled on top of each other, overlapping. This, is no fault of The Bird … blame it on the inexperienced person behind the ordering, that’s me lah.
Total bill: RM 363.80 (Approx RM 23 per pax)
The staff also prepared plates, utensils and a gas stove lighter for our cake cutting ceremony.
Given that both Jimmy and Desmond belt out songs that night, I would say that the meal was cheap! Where else can you get top notch singing by (local) celebrities, completes with a pretty good meal with a mere RM 23 per pax? The songs are familiar to those in their early to mid 40s onwards … It was heartwarming seeing my mom and her siblings (my Uncle and Aunt) enjoying the songs, and had a good night out.
Customers can also go up stage and sing, after 9.15pm … So, if you are into singing old melodies, this place is right up your alley.
Thanks Desmond, thanks Jimmy, thanks The Bird for a memorable night. And thanks to big sis and big tzeh fu for the dinner treat.
p/s: They also have single-serving rice and noodle dishes, price ranging from RM 7.90 – RM 16.90.
Hmm .. so one week later, I went back to The Bird on a Saturday night. There was no singing on that night though, and I was there for around 3 hours, from 6pm-9pm.
It was an enjoyable light dinner with two friends. We shared a plate of Fried Tomyum Beehoon with Fish (ikan cencaru sumbat) (RM 16.90), a small plate of Kai Lan (RM 13), and their Coffee Fried Chicken Wings (Set of 3) (RM 11.90). Bill came up to slightly less than RM 50 including drinks.
