A Life Between Two Countries, And All In Between

Malaysia

Wish I Had Known About SS2 Durian House Stall. Not.

An overseas Malaysian friend from Down Under was in town, and durian is the one and only must-eat thing in his list. Ahh .. I can relate to this all too well: the perils of growing up with an abundance of durian in Malaysia soils. I also miss the real deal when I am in Thailand, and just make do with Thai durians. But in Australia, most of the “fresh” durians are imported from overseas and they are frozen. Not the same thing definitely.

Coconut shake is available too

SS2 is top-of-mind when I think about durian .. and I chanced upon SS2 Durian House stall, a new operator located near to SS2 Wai Sek Kai recently. So, I brought him and another friend there sans research beforehand .. Writing this blog post, the research kicks-in only now. Oh boy, the reviews on their Facebook page here are nasty! In retrospect, ours pale in comparison.

Price list

Well, we were there rather late; didn’t manage to take “advantage” of their RM 30 all-you-can-eat buffet (RM 20 for 6-12 years old, Free for 5 years old and below). “Advantage” or perhaps not, given the bad reviews on FB and some even calling their promotion a SCAM! But it did baffled us why would they tell us about the promotion when we first walked by after the buffet time frame. If you’re keen (despite the negative reviews), the durian buffet is only from 2-7pm, and limit to 1 hour dining time, on first-come-first-serve basis. Durian species includes D101, D13, D18, Red Prawn and some other species .. In light of the negative reviews, you might want to check their stocks beforehand.

Anyway, we went for:

About D101

D101 (Grade B) – RM 56 for 2 (RM25/kilo)

I counted that there were only 5 durian fleshs in the first durian we had. Blimey. Damn expensive wei .. especially when the durian was only average in taste and quality.

About D24

D24 – RM 36 (RM38/kilo)

My friend rejected the first durian served, citing that the taste is off … too watery and not ripe enough. We got a replacement without much issues. The second durian is better, but not drop-dead nice.

The bill came up to RM 92 for 3 so-so durians – thanks James for the treat!

Not Your Typical Tourist

Travel opens up a whole new world, which is cliche but true. I am a strong advocate for independent and solo travel. I was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but now live in Bangkok, Thailand, resulted from a chance encounter in 2009 with my why-are-you-Thai bf. I am now split between two countries. One country for my bf, another for the family, for the occasional weekend together.
