Mount Kinabalu Climbing Package 2016

After the unfortunate Mount Kinabalu quake in June 2015, the park was closed for nearly three months. It has been reopened since 1st Sept 2015, but climbers will be able to climb up to only Laban Rata. Trail to summit is expected to be opened by 1st December 2015.

Flashback to 2014, our Mount Kinabalu expedition was conquered until Sayat-sayat Check Point, the last mountain hut on the way to the summit. After our first attempt in 2014, we planned to scale the summit again in 2016.

As my group’s organizer, I was looking for 2016 package info. I did not find any information on Sutera Sactuary Lodges‘s website, the operator of Kinabalu Park. So, I wrote to them, to inquire about 2016 climb. I used to correspond with them via e-mails, so I sent my e-mail to the same e-mail address sslmresv1@suteraharbour.com.my, but my e-mail was bounced back. I then wrote to this e-mail address sales@suteraharbour.com.my, found on Sutera Sactuary Lodges website. And I got a respond from their Reservation Department, within the same day.

These are the rates that I’ve just received directly from Sutera Sactuary Lodges. There are two types of package:  3 days 2 nights package and 2 days 1 night package. They stated that 2D1N package is only bookable at 30 days prior to climbing dates upon availability.

Holy moly. Rates increased by 47% for Malaysian climbers! We paid RM 482 for Malaysians and RM 719 for International climbers back in 2014 for 3D2N Mesilau trail, and 2016’s rates are now RM 709 for Malaysians and RM 974 for International climbers. It’s freaking expensive!

Since they still have yet to confirm the new trail to the summit, it will be difficult to decide now. In the past, we needed to book six months before our intended climb date. I am also checking whether there is any update to minimum age restriction policy, that was heavily discussed few months back here.
