A last-minute trip, planned one day prior … fulfilled a much-needed relaxing trip for sis and younger niece. Unlike my previous culture trip here, it turned out to be a makan (eating) trip. Not only that, we ended up eating where the local Malaccans eat, out of the touristy Jonker Street .. yipeee!

Accommodation:

Kampung Banda Kaba
Apa Kaba Home & Stay

Apa Kaba Home & Stay is situated in Kampung Banda Kaba, a Unesco listed Zone. Kampung Bandar Kaba is one of the last few heritage villages in this historical part of the town. Other heritage villages include Kampung Bukit Cina, Kampung Limbongan, Tengkera dan Kampung Ujong Pasir, Kampung Ketek,Kampung Morten and Kampung Hulu.

Apa Kaba’s surrounding is very peaceful, and yay … we live among locals at Kampung Kaba. The homestay is not too far away from the hustle and bustle of tourist attractions: approximately 10 mins/750 meters to Stadthuys Santiago hill, St. Paul’s Church, etc, and is also within walking distance to our food joints at Bukit Cina.

Reception area

Entrance to bedrooms with shared bathroom facility
Room 1 & 2 are next to each other, with a connecting door

The 95 years old house was built in 1912, a part wooden and brick house – the entire interior is kept in its original design. There are rooms with e-suite bathrooms, and also shared bathrooms, air cond or fan. We booked A/C rooms with en-suite bathrooms: Room 1 for me and nieces, and alternating Room 2/3 for sis and BIL. Connecting room 2 was not available when we check-in, so sis and BIL slept in Room 3 on first night, and moved to Room 2 the next day. Sis was given a 10% discount as repeat guests.

Room 1 – the most spacious en-suite bathroom

Room 1 – standard private tripe (1 Queen + 1 Single) ensuite @ RM 135 – 10% discount + Melaka Heritage fee RM 2  per room per night =RM 123.50.

Room 2

Room 3

Room 3 – standard private twin (2 single) ensuite @ RM 90 + Melaka Heritage fee RM2 = RM 83. The en-suite bathroom is the smallest in this room (comparing with Room 1&2).

Apa Kaba breakfast: Fruits

Breakfast is included, but clearly stated that for local breakfast and fruit, it is limited to 1 item/person … gosh. Day 1 was banana cake and Day 2 was roti canai. For heavy breakfast eaters, no limit for bread though .. so eat your heart out!

You tiao

Sis’ family wanted to eat the you tiao here … the uncle also recognized them, having bought you tiao from here previously. This stall is located at Bukit Cina market, just around the corner from Capitol Satay. In the evening, they still operate even though the market is closed.

A good local coffee

This chee cheong fun + yam cake stall in front of Kedai Makan Leong Heng, has been there for decades, I was told. When we were there, there were customers waiting for their take away goodies. But we had ours inside the restaurant. Chee cheong fun mixed with yam cake, that’s how local Malaccans have their chee cheong fun. I enjoyed the meal .. as authentic as it can get, I thought. But I like the coffee more than the chee cheong fun .. or rather, it goes well together.

Uncle Tetsu Melaka Raya

Uncle Tetsu Melaka Raya
Uncle Tetsu

Just because there is an Uncle Tetsu shop on its own (unlike KL), it deserves a mention here. Kids wanted to surprise their parents, so we walked over from Apa Kaba (15 mins, 1.2km) in the late afternoon. and got a signature cheesecake (RM21). Younger niece said “I walked under scorching hot sun to get this cheesecake” to her parents.

Mix with chili sauce

Sis’ family were raving about the wantan mee here. Pale-looking wan tan mee, very-Thai, I thought. Come here for local taste of wan tan mee with chilli sauce. There is a bottle of chili sauce on every table, which I tried. It seems that Malaccans eat their wan ton mee mix with chili sauce.

There is a notice in Chinese, which says “order first, look for seat later.”

Nyonya Michelle Soo – Authentic Nyonya Chang

Nyonya chang supper

This was recommended by sis’ friends – they do not take walk-in; it is make to order. So, sis ordered some, and already planned to collect it. But Michelle was really kind to send it over, informing that she’ll be heading to this part of the city. So all of them had change for supper. I kept mine, how to digest all the glutinous rice in the middle of the night lah?

RM 3.50 per bowl, and we were told that they add condensed milk on top of coconut milk into the cendol. Eeew. But it does tastes nicer than Aunty Lee and Makko.

Not Your Typical Tourist

Travel opens up a whole new world, which is cliche but true. I am a strong advocate for independent and solo travel. I was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but now live in Bangkok, Thailand, resulted from a chance encounter in 2009 with my why-are-you-Thai bf. I am now split between two countries. One country for my bf, another for the family, for the occasional weekend together.
