Custard Nakamura: A Taste of Authentic Japanese Bakery Comfort in Bangkok

Step into Custard Nakamura and you’re instantly transported to a cozy, homemade-style Japanese bakery. Operating since 1970, this small, grab-and-go shop has been a beloved institution in Bangkok for decades, offering over 200 varieties of treats. It’s a place that feels like a treasure trove of good feelings—a true comfort bakery.

From soft buns and breads to delicate choux creams, madeleines, and fluffy cakes, the shop is a compact wonderland of Japanese goodies. They even celebrate seasonal festivals, carrying special treats for occasions like Tanabata.

Our Top Picks & Seasonal Specials

While the selection can be overwhelming, there are a few standouts worth trying. My personal go-to’s are the savory Beef Curry Donut and the satisfying Walnut Bread. I also recently picked up their classic Madeleine.

During the current shio pan craze, the bakery is hosting a special “shio pan fair” with ten different sweet and savory varieties, including:

  • Shio Pan Mentaiko (58 baht)
  • Shio Pan and Butter (65 baht)
  • Shio Pan Pork Cutlet (80 baht)
  • Shio Pan Cream Cheese (150 baht)

More Than a Bakery, It’s a Vibe

Unlike some of the high-end specialty bakeries I’ve reviewed, such as https://www.notyourtypicaltourist.com/thailand-2/conkeys-bakery-ekkamai/ and https://www.notyourtypicaltourist.com/thailand-2/yamazaki-sun-moulin/, Custard Nakamura offers a different kind of experience. Its charm lies in its soft, filling-filled bread, fluffy cakes topped with generous pieces of fruit, and, most importantly, prices that won’t break the bank.

Owned by a Japanese family with ingredients imported from Japan, the bakery is always bustling with a mix of Thai, Japanese, and international customers, all drawn to its delicious and authentic offerings. Adding to its value, they also have a loyalty program: for every 50 baht you spend, you get one stamp. Collect 10 stamps for a 25 baht discount on your next purchase, or 20 stamps for a 60 baht discount.

On a recent Tuesday afternoon visit, a Japanese man entered the shop and said dōmo arigatō gozaimasu (thank you very much in Japanese) to everyone. After visiting this bakery for more than a decade, I finally got to see the owner in person. It was a perfect, small moment that added to the shop’s charm.

Not Your Typical Tourist

Travel opens up a whole new world, which is cliche but true. I am a strong advocate for independent and solo travel. I was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but now live in Bangkok, Thailand, resulted from a chance encounter in 2009 with my why-are-you-Thai bf. I am now split between two countries. One country for my bf, another for the family, for the occasional weekend together.
