After You is back in in my good books, and that’s what durian does to you. After You Durian Room to be precise, not for the faint-hearted. Located side-by-side with After You at Siam Paragon, the small teeny-weeny space says a lot about the niche market the Durian Room is catering too. And of course the King of Fruit comes with a price tag too.
After You uses locally-sourced durian – so it’s Thai durian yo. For Malaysians, we love our Made In Malaysian durians; please manage (i.e. lower down) your expectations accordingly. They were using Monthong durian from Chantaburi during our visit.
I have learned that Monthong durian can be nice too, if it’s ripe-enough. Typically, those Monthong sold in Thailand caters to Thai’s taste bud. But, you can also find “soft Monthong” – it’s light-creamy, mild sweet-tasting flesh with moderate smell.
I enjoyed their Durian Crumbstick (95 baht), a durian-shaped ice cream, and I finished the whole piece by myself! Bf and I both shared a Durian Frappe (165 baht). For a non-durian lover, he enjoyed the Durian Frappe, phew!
One week later, we went back for the oh-damn-expensive kakigori (345 baht) – a Japanese shaved ice dessert filled with durian and sticky rice. I find that it was a bit too much for just the 2 of us. Perhaps it’s good for sharing for 3-4 pax.. The table next to us ordered additional durian topping – must be a huge durian fan!
Mango is also available at the Durian Room – mango sticky rice toast or mango sticky rice kakigori.
