Rawrrrrrrr Jurassic World Movie Outing With Family at Cathay eCurve

I arranged for a last-minute family movie outing, which requires a lot of compromise and co-ordination for more ‘family time together’ for mum’s sake. Blessed my siblings for making time for it, agreeing to a late night show, especially for the Ngs who have early bedtime.

It has been a looong, loooong time since we had a family movie outing. The last time we had one with the whole family was during Chinese New Year many, many years back. I was the organizer as well back then. In sheer desperation, I bought tickets with seats quite close to the screen. It remains a boo-boo well-remembered long after.

This time, I bought the farthest row from the screen. Phew. We occupied the whole center row at Row A, plus two seats at Row B. Total 14 seats. I even did a seating plan for this movie outing. The planner in me just can’t help it.

Second sis suggested Cathay eCurve as it is less crowded and tickets are easily available. But do avoid buying tickets at counters during peak period: Friday-Sunday nights.

Cathay eCurve cinema’s pricing and ticketing / F&B system is unlike GSC and TGV cinemas. There are improvements that can be made, but somehow, I think it will fall on deaf ears.

On pricing, couple seats and standard seats pricing are the same, at RM 16 per seat. This has gotta be the only cinema chain that charges the same price for couple and standard seats. The cheapest couple seat in town.

Luckily, for the couple seat, it is posible to pull down the handrest if you want to switch it to standard seat. Perfect for our family group. Otherwise imagine two teenage brothers sharing a couple seat …. weird!

For group booking, their online system only accepts max 10 seats per booking, and it comes with RM 1 booking fee, chargeable per transaction.

For children/students and senior citizens above 55 years of age, ticket price will be at RM10.00 from Mondays to Fridays before 6pm at any Cathay Cineplexes. But the online system does not allows booking at this rate. Their website states “Credit card discounts, movie gift vouchers, complimentary passes, student & senior citizen rates (including all promotional ticket rates), are not applicable with online / phone bookings. These are only applicable at box office.”

There were also confusions with no confirmation e-mail received after booking is completed. Then, Cathay will need to indicate that clearly. I managed to screen capture the booking confirmation itself, and used it to collect the tickets.

The ticketing counter for online booking collection was not indicated clearly as well. Ticket collection counter is at the Ambank card priority lane. F&B can only be purchased at ticketing counters. Menus are not on any screen/poster display, it can only be viewed at the ticketing counter itself; it slows down the queue, especially on  busy nights!

F&B counters are only for collection

Combo menu with ala carte price indicated. Medium popcorn ala carte is available at RM 8.90.

Their limited menu

Long queue at ‘normal’ counters. Go to the farthest right counter, the ‘Ambank Card priority lane’ for online ticket collection and last-minute F&B purchase

For movie ticket stubs collector, this might not be the right cinema for you as their tickets are the flimsy type.

Flimsy tickets

Our movie finished past 11pm. We didn’t face any problem collecting our cars as the mall was still ‘open’, so one hassle solved. Kudos to eCurve for that. Some malls close certain exit points after 10pm.

Travel opens up a whole new world, which is cliche but true. I am a strong advocate for independent and solo travel. I was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but now live in Bangkok, Thailand, resulted from a chance encounter in 2009 with my why-are-you-Thai bf. I am now split between two countries. One country for my bf, another for the family, for the occasional weekend together.
